Clapham family, of Yarm

Robert Clapham (d.1901) was briefly a PM itinerant (1839-46) before resigning on health grounds. He established a grocery business and a rope works at Yarm on Tees and later at Stockton. He was Vice-President of the PM Conference in 1891. His son John Robert Clapham (1847-1923) prospered greatly in the family business and became an expert in shipping matters. His two sons divided the two sides of the business between them. He was active in local government, as a Poor Law Guardian and County Councillor. Both father and son were active in PM circles and in philanthropy. John donated 10,000 to the Itinerant Preachers\' Friendly Society in 1919.
