WM itinerant named in the Deed of Declaration. With his elder brother John Brettell (1742-96; e.m. 1771) he spent three years in Ireland and was Wesley's travelling companion there. Appointed to Macclesfield in 1778 he pioneered new societies in spite of local opposition to Methodism and won the approval of John Wesley who, unusually, appointed him to the circuit for a second year. He died on 4 December 1828.
