Hardwick, Simeon
1868-1964

Born at Iburndale near Whitby on 5 June 1868 and educated at Grosmont National School, he was employed as a warehouseman by the London & North Eastern Railway at Darlington. An active Primitive Methodist, he served as circuit steward. He was the first Chairman in 1918 of the Darlington Labour Party. First elected to the borough council in 1920, he served until post-1933 and was mayor in 1927. An active trade unionist, he was Secretary of the Darlington National Union of Railwaymen and of its Orphan Fund, 1909-1922. He was also active in the Boy Scouts, St. Johnís Ambulance Brigade, TocH, and the Council for Christian Witness. He died at Darlington on 25 August 1964.
