Kellett-Bowman, Dame Mary Elaine (nee Kay), DBE
1923-2014

Born on 8th July 1923, the daughter of William Kay, a company director, she was educated at Queen Mary school, Lytham and The Mount School, York. After the War, during which she workd as a land girl, she read Modern Greats at St. Anne’s, Oxford. Her first husband, Charles Norman Kellett, a North Wales farmer, was killed in 1959 in a collision with a lorry, in which she suffered loss of memory. She then read for the Bar and was called to the Bar in 1964. She gave up the farm in 1968 and entered Parliament as a Conservative, representing Lancaster 1970-1997. In 1971 she married Edward Bowman, who changed his name to Kellett-Bowman. She was a Member of the European Parliament for Cumbria 1979-1984 and was awarded a DBE in 1998.

A committed Methodist, from 1963 to 2003 she was a governor of Culford School. She died on 4 March 2014.
