Clixby, Charles (1838-1918) and Martha (1836-1920)

The Clixbys were members of Trinity Street PM Church, Gainsborough who made many charitable donations. Having retired from farming, their longstanding interest in and support for the PM Africa mission culminated in 1916 with a gift of £1000 to purchase a farm at Kafue, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). Known ever since as the Clixby Estate, this enabled Kafue Training Institute, important in PM mission strategy, to be opened in 1918 for the preparation of teachers and evangelists. Expert opinion 50 years later judged that this ‘made more educational impact on Northern Rhodesia than twenty little mission stations each running half a dozen outschools’.
