Biggs, Dr Barry J.

Historian, he was born in Leicester and grew up in King Richard's Road Methodist Church (now 'St. Andrew's), where he played the trumpet and the trombone in a jazz band he formed. After National Service in the Navy he graduated in History at Leicester University, with a teaching diploma from Durham. His PhD was from Nottingham University for a thesis on Methodism in a Rural Community. He taught at Darwen Grammar School 1956-61, then at Wesley College, Ibadan, Nigeria 1961-63 and Eaton Hall Training College, Retford 1963-80. When the colllege closed he became Warden of the LambethMethodist International House and worked for four years for the Shaftesbury Society. After his retirement to Colsterworth, he became a volunteer lay pastor. He was the author of The Wesleys and the Early Dorset Methodists (1987).
