Mason, John (Book Steward)
? -1864; e.m. 1811

WM minister, Book Steward 1827-1864. With the benefit of a commercial education, he brought to his ministry business and financial acumen. After serving as a Foreign Missions secretary, he became the longest-serving Book Steward in 1827, in succession to John Kershaw. He inaugurated a new era in Methodist publishing and dealt effectively with the Book Room's long-standing debts. He died suddenly at Stamford Hill on 1 March 1864, one day after going as usual to the office.
