Thompson, Douglas Weddell
1903-1981; e.m. 1925

WM missionary in China, born at Gateshead on 4 July 1903. He was appointed to Hunan, China in 1925, where he worked, apart from a brief period in Calcutta, until 1939. During World War II he served as Chaplain to the Forces, was wounded and taken prisoner (as described in Captives to Freedom (1955; reprinted 2013)). After 13 years in English circuit work, he was appointed General Secretary of the MMS, 1958-68, promoting the appointment of laymen and women to senior posts. He was President of the Conference in 1966. His autobiography, A Mountain Road, was published posthumously in 1983. He died at East Hoathley on 26 February 1981.
