Ward, Charles Henry Spurgeon
1876-1957; e.m.1902

Missionary in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from 1902 to 1935, born in Leeds on 21 July 1876. He was educated at Wesley College, Sheffield and Richmond College. He served in the South Ceylon District from 1902 and was Chairman of the Ceylon and Burma Provincial Synod in 1926. He made an in-depth study of Buddhism, following in the footsteps of Daniel J. Gogerly and Robert S. Hardy in his interpretation, and published The Ethics of Gotama Buddha (1923), Outline of Buddhism (1934) and two volumes on Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism. He died on 17 March 1957.
