Scholes, Percy Alfred
1877-1958

Music critic, educator and encyclopaedist, born on 24 June 1877 in Headingley, Leeds into a WM family. From 1894 he was employed in the library of Yorkshire College (later Leeds University), and from 1900 to 1903 as music master at Kent College, Canterbury. Subsequent studies at the Royal College of Music and Oxford University were followed by an appointment as registrar of the City of Leeds College of Music from 1908 to 1912. His classic work is the Oxford Companion to Music (1938 and many subsequent editions). He died on 31 July 1958 at Vevey, Switzerland.

His two brothers, Ernest F.P. Scholes (1868-1966; e.m. 1895) and T. Wilfrid Scholes ( 1879-1955; e.m. 1904) became missionaries in China. The latter married a daughter of William Perkins, President of the 1909 Conference.
