Writer, historian and antiquarian,he was born and lived in Warrington. He edited the IM Magazine from 1901 to 1941 and was compiling editor of A Short History of Independent Methodism (1905) to mark the denomination's centenary. He wrote The Quaker Methodists (1924), The Beginnings of Total Abstinence (1903) and other books on IM history and polity and was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Historical Society for his published thesis Early Warrington Nonconformity (1923). He had strong Quaker sympathies and was a staunch pacifist. As theological examiner for students for the IM ministry, his liberal views strongly influenced the theological trend of the denomination in the first half of the twentieth century.
