Kershaw, Jonathan
1772-1846

He became known as the apostle of the Dales owing to the pioneering work he undertook in establishing Wesleyan Methodism in Garsdale, Dentdale and other areas of Yorkshire and Cumbria. Working as an itinerant tea merchant during the day and preaching at night he founded several Methodist societies including that at Sedbergh and 'Low Smithy,' Garsdale. He and his wife lived in the cottage adjoining the Garsdale Chapel and are buried in the graveyard.
