Ibberson, Herbert
1880-1959

MNC and UM layman, was born on 22 April 1880 at Mapplewell, near Barnsley. He was educated at Leeds University and became a solicitor. He served as a Liberal Councillor and later Chairman of Darton UDC. During the 1940s and 1950s he was a Director of both the Methodist Recorder\'' and the Methodist Insurance Company. He was a Circuit Steward in the Barnsley (West) Circuit for over twenty years. An outstanding local preacher, he was treasurer (1923-27) and then secretary (1927-32) of the UM Local Preachers' Committee, organizing Easter preachers' schools at Ashville College for many years. He was Treasurer of the Wesley Historical Society from 1935 to 1959 and was also Co-Secretary of the LPMAA and its President in 1942. As a member of the Methodist Union Committee he argued for an equal number of lay and ministerial ex officio members at Conference. He spoke at the Methodist Church Congress in 1931 on 'Methodism and Song' and in 1932 represented United Methodism at the World Methodist Conference in Atlanta, GA. He was Vice-President of the Conference in 1942. He died on 22 July 1959.
