Gee, Thomas
1815-1898

Welsh Calvinistic Methodist, born at Denbigh on 24 January 1815. He was apprenticed at 14 to his father, a printer. After two years in London with Eyre and Spottiswoode he rejoined his father, taking over his business after his death in 1845. Although he became a local preacher, thoughts of entering the ministry were set aside. He published the most widely used Welsh hymnbook and other religious literature, and from 1857 an influential Welsh-language weekly newspaper, Baner Cymru, which furthered Welsh Liberalism and nationalism. He was prominent in business and public affairs in Denbigh and in the activities of the Calvinistic Methodists. He died at Fronallt, Denbigh on 28 June 1898
