Field, Benjamin
1827-1869

He went as a WM missionary to India in 1846 and was stationed in the Kanarese Mission at Gubbi, but returned home after two years with impaired health. He later went to Australia, where he edited the Wesleyan Chronicle and compiled The Student's Handbook of Christian Theology, completed shortly before his death. This drew extensively on John Wesley's writings, and also on those of Richard Watson and John Fletcher. Published in Melbourne in 1869 and in England in 1870, it became a standard text for Methodist preachers and was reprinted a number of times in both London and New York, with additional material and a biographical sketch in 1876.
