Farrow, Derek Robert
1925-1999; e.m. 1949

Born at Goodmayes, Essex on 6 August 1925, he grew up in the Boys' Brigade. At the close of the war he was training as a Spitfire Pilot. He was educated at Leeds University and Headingley College. He served in several circuits, including East Ham in the London Mission, before becoming general secretary of the Department of Connexional Funds (later the Division of Finance) in 1968, combining it at times with circuit pastoral work. On becoming a supernumerary in 1989 he continued as chairman of the Methodist Ministers’ Housing Society until his death. His publications included Meditations on Ministry (1977) and Through the Eye of a Needle (1980), on the Christian attitude towards money. He contributed two hymns to Hymns and Psalms: 586, written to celebrate the birth of his first grandchild and 658 for use at a stone-laying or the dedication of a new church; but neither survived into Singing the Faith. He died on 14 March 1999.
